Living in Ibrag

The name Swieqi means ‘water channels’ and is located between Ghargur, San Gwann, and St Julian’s, yet even until after World War II, Swieqi existed as little more than some sparse valleys and farmland. Over time, families began to settle in the area, away from the increasing populations of Sliema and St Julian’s.

In 1994 the Swieqi Local Council was established, and the church at Ta’ L-Ibrag was upgraded to a parish church in 1999. This church was built in the 1960s and is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary.

Ibrag is part of Swieqi, a residential area in the north of Malta approximately fifteen minutes travelling distance from Sliema and within walking distance of St. Julian’s and Paceville, Malta’s thriving nightlife districts.

In Swieqi one can indulge in plenty of historical sites, from the Victoria Lines (part of the British fortifications built in 1878) to Fort Madliena, Madliena Tower and Madliena Chapel.

Ibrag is a centrally located area which was recently developed. Retaining its quiet and peaceful environment this area has attracted numerous upper-middle class and high-class persons to live here. Accommodating more than 8,000 people, Swieqi boasts luxurious residential properties, from townhouses and villas to apartments, and also accommodates a number of service industries from IT to language schools. Swieqi also offers a number of hotels and tourist apartments.

The Ibrag property market boasts various new apartment and maisonette developments as well as villas and bungalows, many with private swimming pools. This area is a popular area for holiday rentals and boasts a range of self-catering apartments and holiday villas, including the prestigious Villa Phantasia, one of the most exclusive luxury rentals in Malta.

Ibrag and the surrounding area is a charming area of green areas and sea views providing beautiful walking in the spring.

Ibrag is a thriving modern area and Swieqi was an immensely popular area during the time of the British regiments in Malta, thanks to the nearby barracks. Luxol Football Club hosts regular football matches, other sports events and has been used to hold some of Malta’s best music concerts, from Malta’s tenor Joseph Calleja to Roger Waters, Brian Adams and Zucchero.
